Youth & Family Ministry Update (December 2020) by Audrey & Alex Lofland, Youth & Family Ministry Coordinators
A few years ago, I experienced a glimpse into the deeper meaning of Christmas. Each day in November my family would write down something we were thankful for and post a sticky note on the wall by our dinner table. Halfway through November, it hit me. We were about to have a whole lot of sticky notes, a whole lot of blessings. These blessings were counted, reflected on, and appreciated. Under this avalanche of thanksgiving, this onslaught of provision, I felt an urge. A wonderful urge, to share. To give. In that moment, everything made sense.
Even though Thanksgiving has passed, let us continue to count our blessings, name them one by one. Let the Lord bury us in thanksgiving that we finally poke our heads out of the top of the pile and find ourselves eager to share and give gifts of joy when Christmas arrives. Thankfulness reaps contentment. Contentment reaps joy. And joy wants to be shared with loved ones and strangers alike. ~~~~~ Chances are your Christmas plans look different this year. We hope that you can find a way to be with those you love either in person or virtually. Thank goodness for technology that can link us together and allow us to connect with our community of friends and believers.
On that note, we invite the youth in your family (grades 6 – 12) to join our group. Digitally we are meeting through Zoom. Youth can find content for this discussion group in the Band App. This can be found in your App Store or Google Play*. The name of our group is simply “St. John Youth”. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to us. Lizzy White is leading this group monthly. *The band app logo looks like this.
We continue to explore ways to help people connect. One great way is through small groups. If you feel an inkling of motivation towards being involved in a small group, that is the Lord answering our prayers. We have been praying for you to reach out to us and share your ideas. While meeting in person may be a challenge currently, we would still love to hear from you if you would be interested in getting involved with a small group. This does not mean you are left alone with no support. We would work with you to build a plan for a discussion group, book study, whatever you would like as a means for building community.
You might have heard that National Youth Gathering has been moved to the summer of 2022. We are working to provide fundraising opportunities for students to help with the expense of National Youth Gathering. Please be on the lookout for fundraisers in the monthly newsletter, so you can help us send our youth to National Youth Gathering ’22.
Finally, we pray for peace. We pray that you may find peace in your daily life. We pray that peace finds you when you are most stressed. Our world seems to be ridden with chaos, disease, terrible news, and amid all this I still hear “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” Greater than all our worry, our sin, and our fears, the LORD God has the whole world in His hands. Amen, Audrey & Alex
